Polaris Outlaw 70 EFI
At the Outlaw’s heart is a 70cc air-cooled four-stroke engine. Its small engine capacity makes it a very approachable machine for the newest riders. Since it is electronically fuel injected, that means improved reliability when starting in cold temperatures. Parents will be in control with the adjustable speed limiter that allows them to tailor available speed (1–15 mph) to the rider’s skill level. When the throttle is engaged, power is transferred to the 2WD system via a chain drive. While the CVT transmission is easy to use, the forward-only gear means there’s no going back…ward.
Handling
Fours across the board: The Outlaw 70 EFI has 4 inches travel for the front and rear suspension and 4 inches of ground clearance. Front suspension is handled by a single A-arm, whereas the back is fitted with a monoshock swingarm. Its 37.8-inch wheelbase and low-slung 278-pound dry weight, though not the most compact or lightest, will still be manageable for young riders to handle while they navigate down trails. Polaris claims the 18-inch tires improve stability and handling.
Brakes
A pull on the single brake lever gets stopping action from all of the Outlaw 70s discs simultaneously. There’s a hydraulic disc at each front wheel, one axle-mounted hydraulic disc out back, and a handlebar-mounted mechanical locking parking brake as well.
Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility
Seating capacity is limited to one rider of ages 6 through 10. Kids grow like weeds during that time period, so they may feel cramped when they grow to a 10-year-old’s height. The 25.8-inch seat height, however, will make it easy for them to clamber aboard no matter the age. Standard features include a tether, tool kit, safety flag, one youth helmet, and training DVD. For additional comfort, an optional accessory windshield is available.
Payload/Towing
Payload capacity is 140 pounds, so it is only suitable for kids. The rear rack capacity is 25 pounds, so kids will be traveling fairly light.
Aside from the electronic fuel injection and the adjustable speed limiter, the Outlaw 70′s electronics include an electric starter, horn, and LED lighting. There’s also a check engine light to warn the user if something is amiss.
Ease of Maintenance
Electronic fuel injection systems are always nice because it means not only that fueling will be under control and startups will be reliable, but that the owner does not have to worry about carburetor maintenance. The Outlaw’s CVT belts and chain drive will need to be inspected and maintained regularly.
The small Outlaw comes with a six-month, unlimited-mileage factory warranty. For those seeking extended coverage, there are options available at time of purchase.
